Paper Types Explained

Coated Paper

Art Paper and Art Card is also known as coated paper as it is coated in Kaolinite or China clay. This gives the paper a greater weight and density, surface gloss, smoothness and allows a wide range of finishes. Art card is typically used in boutique style fashion bags. Art card thickness is measured in Grams per square metre (gsm) generally ranging from 157 gsm to 230gsm. Paper of heavier weights up to 350 gsm are available but are more difficult to work with. Art paper and Art Card can have Printing, Blind and Bold Embossing, Hot Foil Spot UV, Matt and Gloss Lamination.

Uncoated Paper

Kraft Paper is so named because it is produced in the Kraft pulping process which produces long unbleached fibres giving the paper a superior strength compared to other pulping processes. This also means that the paper is 100% recyclable. Kraft paper is traditionally Brown or White in colour and can have blind and bold embossing, Over Print Varnish, Hot Foil stamping and Spot UV.
